How to Sell an Online Course Even When YouTube Offers It for Free

Are online courses still profitable ?

What are the most profitable online courses to sell?

How can I make money selling online courses?

What is the most profitable thing to sell online?

How do I sell my own course?

These are questions I hear regularly from people who want to create and sell online courses.

But there is another question I hear even more often.

“Danny, why would anyone buy my course when they can find the same information on YouTube for free?”

And honestly, I understand the concern.

YouTube is packed with tutorials, educational videos, webinars, podcasts, free courses and experts willing to share information without charging a dime.

So naturally, you might think:

“Why would someone pay me when they can get this information for free?”

My answer is simple.

It is not only about WHAT you teach. It is much more about HOW you package, position and sell what you teach.

And once you understand this, the entire online course business starts to look very different.

Free Information Does Not Mean There Is No Market

Let me give you an example.

Digital marketing.

For years, people have been creating courses about digital marketing.

There are thousands of YouTube videos explaining SEO, Facebook advertising, email marketing, content marketing, social media marketing and virtually every other aspect of the subject.

You could probably search YouTube right now and find enough free digital marketing content to keep you busy for months.

Yet people are still buying digital marketing courses.

Why?

The information may be free, but the transformation is not.

Think about it.

People don’t necessarily buy an online course because the information inside it cannot be found anywhere else.

They buy because they want someone to organize the information, simplify it, guide them through it and help them achieve a specific result.

That distinction is extremely important.

So, Are Online Courses Still Profitable in 2026?

Yes.

But I would not tell you that simply creating a course automatically makes it profitable.

It doesn’t.

The opportunity is not in recording 50 videos and uploading them to a course platform.

The opportunity is in identifying a problem people already want to solve and creating an offer that makes your solution easier, clearer or more attractive than the alternatives.

That is why I am actually more interested in a popular course topic than a topic nobody is searching for.

Why?

The market.

A popular topic already has attention.

People are already asking questions about it.

People are already searching for solutions.

People are already spending money trying to solve the problem.

Your job is not necessarily to invent a completely new topic.

Your job is to sell the topic differently.

What Are the Most Profitable Online Courses to Sell?

This is where many aspiring course creators get stuck.

They spend weeks trying to discover a topic nobody else has covered.

I think that can be a mistake.

Instead, look for problems that already have demand.

Courses around areas such as business, digital marketing, sales, personal development, technology, career development, professional skills, finance, fitness and creative skills can attract buyers because people actively want solutions in these areas.

But here’s the interesting part.

You don’t have to be the first person to teach the subject.

You have to give people a compelling reason to choose your version.

Imagine two courses teaching essentially the same broad subject.

Course A says:

“Complete Digital Marketing Course”

Course B says:

“How to Get Your First 100 Customers Online Without Wasting Money on Ads”

Which one sounds more specific?

Which one speaks directly to a desired outcome?

Which one creates curiosity?

That’s the difference between simply having a course and having an offer people want to buy.

How Can I Make Money Selling Online Courses?

This is another question worth answering carefully.

You make money selling online courses by solving a problem that people are willing to pay to solve.

But solving the problem is only one part of the equation.

You also need to communicate the value effectively.

This means your course needs:

  • A clearly defined audience
  • A specific problem
  • A desirable outcome
  • A strong course title
  • A compelling offer
  • A clear sales message
  • A way to reach potential customers
  • A reason for people to trust you

And most importantly, you need positioning.

Positioning answers a simple question:

“Why should I buy your course instead of watching another YouTube video?”

Your answer cannot simply be:

“Because my course contains information.”

So does YouTube.

Your answer needs to communicate the experience, structure, convenience, transformation, support or specific outcome your course provides.

What Is the Most Profitable Thing to Sell Online?

If you ask me, knowledge becomes extremely valuable when it is connected to a specific problem.

People don’t really want information for information’s sake.

They want results.

Someone doesn’t necessarily want to learn email marketing because they love learning about email marketing.

They may want to learn it because they want more customers.

Someone doesn’t necessarily want to learn graphic design because they want another skill.

They may want to start freelancing.

Someone doesn’t necessarily want to learn digital marketing because they want another certificate.

They may want to grow their business.

The closer your course gets to a meaningful desired outcome, the easier it becomes to communicate its value.

This is why I always encourage course creators to think beyond the subject.

Don’t just ask:

“What can I teach?”

Ask:

“What problem can I help someone solve?”

That question can completely change the way you create and sell your course.

How Do I Sell My Own Course?

This is where things get even more interesting.

You can have an excellent course and still struggle to make sales.

Why?

Because people cannot buy something they don’t understand.

And they cannot understand the value if your marketing doesn’t communicate it.

When selling your own course, don’t begin by shouting:

“Buy my course!”

Start by addressing the problem.

Show people that you understand what they are struggling with.

Then show them why the conventional approach isn’t working.

Create curiosity around a better approach.

Finally, introduce your course as the logical next step.

That’s the approach I prefer.

Problem → Realization → Curiosity → Solution.

For example:

“You’ve probably noticed that thousands of people are already selling digital marketing courses.

So you may be wondering whether there is still room for another course.

But what if the competition isn’t actually the problem?

What if the problem is that most course creators are selling the topic the same way everyone else does?”

Now we have curiosity.

And curiosity creates an opening for your solution.

Sell Popular Course Topics Differently

This is probably one of the most important lessons I want you to take away.

Don’t be afraid of popular course topics.

A popular topic can mean there is a market.

The mistake is assuming that you must copy everyone else.

You don’t.

Let’s return to digital marketing.

Instead of creating another generic:

“Digital Marketing Masterclass”

you could create something much more focused.

For example:

“Digital Marketing for Local Businesses: How to Get More Customers Without Hiring an Agency.”

Same broad market.

Different positioning.

Or consider a course about artificial intelligence.

Instead of:

“Learn AI”

you could position it around a specific audience and outcome:

“AI for Small Business Owners: How to Automate Everyday Tasks and Save Hours Every Week.”

Again, the subject isn’t necessarily new.

The angle is.

And that is where your opportunity lies.

Your Course Does Not Have to Compete With YouTube

This is the mindset shift I want you to make.

Stop asking:

“How can I teach something YouTube doesn’t already have?”

Start asking:

“How can I make my solution more useful to the person I want to help?”

YouTube gives people information.

Your course can give them a path.

You can organize the lessons.

Remove unnecessary information.

Create a step-by-step framework.

Give them practical assignments.

Provide templates and resources.

Show them what to do first, second and third.

Help them avoid common mistakes.

And package everything around a specific result.

That is value.

The Secret Is Not Always the Course Topic

Over the years, I have become increasingly convinced that course creators spend too much time trying to find the “perfect” topic.

Sometimes the topic isn’t the problem.

The offer is.

You can take a popular subject and make it interesting with the right positioning.

You can take a common problem and create a unique solution.

You can take an existing course idea and communicate it in a way that makes people stop scrolling.

And you can take information people can find for free and turn it into a structured learning experience people are willing to pay for.

That is the opportunity.

So, Can You Still Sell an Online Course in 2026?

Absolutely.

But don’t enter the market believing that your advantage is having information nobody else has.

Your advantage can be your angle, positioning, framework, presentation, experience and ability to help your audience reach a desired outcome.

The internet has made information abundant.

That doesn’t make expertise worthless.

It makes clarity, structure and positioning more important.

So the next time you look at your course idea and think:

“But this is already on YouTube…”

Don’t immediately abandon the idea.

Ask a better question:

“How can I sell this popular course topic differently?”

Because sometimes the biggest opportunity isn’t hiding in a brand-new idea.

Sometimes it is sitting inside a popular idea that everyone else is selling the wrong way.
